Background of the Study

Frailty is a common condition among older adults, characterized by reduced strength, endurance, and physiological function, increasing the risk of falls, disability, and mortality (WHO, 2024). Regular physical activity has been proven to delay the onset of frailty, improve muscle function, and enhance overall well-being among the elderly (Adeyemi & Yusuf, 2024). Exercise education programs play a critical role in teaching older adults about the benefits of physical activity, proper techniques, and ways to incorporate movement into daily routines.

In Jigawa State, many elderly individuals lead sedentary lifestyles due to cultural practices, lack of exercise facilities, and inadequate knowledge about physical fitness (Okafor & Musa, 2024). This study aims to examine the role of exercise education in preventing frailty among the elderly, assessing its impact on mobility, strength, and overall health.

Statement of the Problem

Frailty among the elderly in Jigawa State contributes to increased healthcare costs, reduced independence, and a higher risk of falls and injuries (Okafor & Musa, 2024). Despite the benefits of exercise, many elderly individuals do not engage in regular physical activity due to a lack of awareness, accessibility, and motivation. Existing exercise education programs may not be effectively reaching or engaging the elderly population.

This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of exercise education programs in preventing frailty among older adults in Jigawa State and to identify barriers to physical activity participation.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of exercise education on frailty prevention among the elderly in Jigawa State.

2. To examine the level of awareness and participation in exercise programs among older adults.

3. To identify challenges faced by elderly individuals in maintaining an active lifestyle.

Research Questions

1. How does exercise education influence frailty prevention among older adults in Jigawa State?

2. What is the level of awareness and participation in exercise programs among the elderly?

3. What are the main barriers to elderly participation in physical activity?

Research Hypotheses

1. Exercise education significantly reduces frailty risks among the elderly.

2. Elderly individuals with higher exercise awareness are more likely to engage in physical activity.

3. Lack of access to exercise education and facilities increases frailty rates among older adults.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly individuals in Jigawa State who participate in or are exposed to exercise education programs. Limitations may include differences in individual health conditions, availability of exercise facilities, and willingness to participate.

Definitions of Terms

• Exercise Education: Instructional programs designed to promote physical activity and educate individuals on the benefits of exercise.

• Frailty: A condition in older adults characterized by reduced strength, endurance, and vulnerability to health complications.

• Physical Activity: Any movement that engages muscles and requires energy expenditure, contributing to overall health.
